Appearance decides every later render
You begin by choosing the overall style, realistic or anime, and then the physical details. This is the stage that pays off most, because the image generator works from a selected character: once the appearance is saved, you can keep changing outfit, action, pose, accessories, and scene while the face stays the same across a whole set of images.
If you generate from a blank prompt instead, you get a different person every time. That is the single practical difference between a custom build and a one-off render.
Personality and interests shape the replies
Next you describe temperament, speaking style, and the interests the companion should raise on its own. Candy AI companions use the conversation so far, the settings you selected, and stored context to personalise future replies, so these fields are not cosmetic: they are the starting state of that context.
Roleplay then follows the prompts and themes you provide. Casual chat, a fictional story or a relationship scenario all work from the same character sheet, provided your content follows the Community Guidelines and applicable law.
Keep expectations calibrated. The character is fictional even when the replies sound personal, and it has no real emotions, intentions, or ability to keep promises.

Match the voice to the personality rather than picking the one you like most in isolation. A bold voice on a deliberately calm character reads as a mismatch within a couple of messages.
What a custom build may not contain
Content controls apply to text, images, videos, and voice messages, and they apply to a character you built exactly as they do to a stock profile. Prohibited material includes:
- Content involving minors
- Non-consensual intimate imagery and real-person likenesses
- Sexual violence and animal abuse
- Terrorism, self-harm instructions, and illegal activity
- Attempts to bypass moderation
Candy AI can moderate or change a request before it generates an output, and flagged conversations or media may be reviewed manually. Violations can lead to content removal, account restrictions, suspension, termination, or a report to the appropriate authorities.
From an empty creator to a working companion
Candy AI runs in desktop, mobile, and tablet browsers, so the whole build happens in a browser tab with no separate app to install.
- Open candy.ai and sign in. Free accounts can look around, but five messages is the free ceiling, which is not enough to test a character you just built.
- Choose the character creator rather than a ready-made profile, then set the style and the appearance.
- Fill in personality, interests, and the voice style. Write the interests as things the character should bring up, not just things it tolerates.
- Save, then open a chat and send a handful of messages to check the tone before you spend anything on media.
- Send the saved character to the image generator, request a batch of up to 16 images, and hand the best frame to the video creator for a 5, 10, 15 or 20-second clip.
What a custom character costs in practice
Creation itself belongs to the Premium feature list; the media you make afterwards is what moves the meter. Each batch and each clip draws on the balance. A 16-image batch costs more than a single render.

AI Phone Call runs at 3 tokens per minute, so a half-hour call is most of a monthly allowance.
